Timeless Design Features from a Traditional Home Renovation | Amalfi Cove Residence

18 June 2026

A successful traditional home renovation isn’t about erasing a home’s history. It’s about preserving the details that give it character while thoughtfully updating it for modern living.

That philosophy guided every decision at Amalfi Cove Residence. What began as a major renovation evolved into a carefully curated transformation that balanced architectural preservation, custom millwork, timeless furnishings, and practical design solutions tailored to our clients’ lifestyle. From restoring original features and reupholstering meaningful pieces to creating a custom kitchen designed for entertaining, every element was selected with longevity and livability in mind.

Developing the Vision

Every project begins with understanding how our clients live.

For Amalfi Cove Residence, our clients envisioned a home that felt welcoming, elegant, and designed for entertaining. They wanted the comfort and warmth of traditional design while incorporating the functionality required for modern living.

The design direction evolved around a palette of soft blues, warm walnut tones, layered textures, custom upholstery, and architectural details that would bring depth and character to each space. Throughout the home, the goal was to create a sense of continuity while ensuring every room felt unique and purposeful.

Rather than following trends, we focused on creating a timeless interior that would feel just as beautiful years from now as it does today.

Reimagining the Architecture

One of the most significant aspects of this traditional home renovation happened long before furniture and finishes were selected.

The existing home featured a sunken family room that interrupted the natural flow of the space. As part of the renovation, the floor was raised to create a seamless transition from the foyer into the living areas.

Walls were reconfigured, circulation improved, and sightlines carefully considered to create a home that feels connected and cohesive.

Because we were brought into the project early, we were able to collaborate closely with the architect and contractor to incorporate architectural details directly into the construction process.

One of the most impactful additions was the coffered ceiling in the family room.

Ceilings are often overlooked in residential design, yet they have the ability to completely transform a space. The coffered detail introduces visual interest, creates dimension, and draws the eye upward. Even with a lower ceiling height, the room feels larger and more expansive because of this thoughtful architectural enhancement.

Custom coffered ceilings add architectural character and visual height to the family room.

Designing a Family Room for Entertaining

Functionality was a major consideration throughout the design process.

Our clients love to entertain, which meant the family room needed to accommodate gatherings while remaining comfortable for everyday living.

Furniture placement was carefully planned to maximize seating without overwhelming the space. Swivel chairs create flexibility, allowing guests to engage with both the living and dining areas. A generously sized sofa anchors the room, while the ottoman provides additional seating when needed.

Performance fabrics were selected throughout to ensure durability without sacrificing style. With pets and frequent entertaining, every material needed to be beautiful and practical.

We also incorporated leather elements that will continue to develop character over time, embracing the natural aging process rather than fighting against it.

Preserving Original Character

One of the most important lessons in renovation is knowing what deserves to stay.

While many aspects of the home were transformed, there were several original features we intentionally preserved.

The fireplace became one of those moments.

Rather than replacing it with a more contemporary design, we chose to celebrate its traditional charm. The existing fireplace was refreshed and refinished, allowing it to remain a focal point within the family room.

Preserving original architectural elements often creates authenticity that cannot be replicated. These details connect the home’s past with its future and help prevent a renovation from feeling overly new or disconnected from its original character.

The Art of Custom Upholstery

One of our favorite elements of this project was breathing new life into meaningful furnishings.

Our clients had several pieces they loved, including a chair and ottoman that had been part of their home for years. While the original upholstery no longer suited the design direction, the silhouettes remained timeless.

Rather than replacing them, we chose to reupholster the pieces in fabrics that better reflected the overall vision for the home.

Custom upholstery is one of the most effective ways to create a truly personal interior. It allows homeowners to preserve sentimental pieces while ensuring they feel fresh, relevant, and cohesive within the new design.

Throughout the home, layered textiles, custom pillows, trim details, and tailored upholstery contribute to a sense of warmth and refinement.

Custom millwork provides storage while celebrating meaningful collections.

A Traditional Kitchen Designed for Modern Living

The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, and every design decision reflected that reality.

The centerpiece is a custom ten-foot by six-foot island crafted from a single slab of honed Taj Mahal quartzite. Its scale creates a dramatic focal point while providing ample space for meal preparation, gathering, and entertaining.

While the island is visually striking, the functionality behind it is equally important.

Custom spice drawers provide convenient access to everyday essentials. Hidden outlets preserve the beauty of the stone. Appliance panels maintain continuity throughout the cabinetry. Walnut interiors add an unexpected layer of luxury every time a cabinet or drawer is opened.

One of the most intentional decisions involved the backsplash.

While slab stone remains a popular choice, we selected a soft ceramic tile to complement the home’s traditional character. This quieter backdrop allows the custom hood, cabinetry details, and lighting fixtures to take center stage.

Layering Color, Pattern, and Texture

Traditional interiors thrive on thoughtful layering.

Throughout the home, soft blues create a consistent thread connecting the foyer, dining room, primary bedroom, and outdoor spaces. Warm woods, custom upholstery, embroidered fabrics, trim details, and natural textures add depth and visual interest.

Rather than relying on a single statement piece, the design unfolds gradually through carefully considered details.

This layered approach creates interiors that feel collected, comfortable, and timeless.

Luxury Meets Function in the Primary Suite

The primary suite was designed to feel like a private retreat.

Vinyl wallcoverings provide texture and sophistication while offering durability in high-moisture environments. The adjoining bathroom continues the layered aesthetic with a calming palette and a spacious steam shower featuring large-format porcelain panels.

The absence of excessive grout lines creates a clean, seamless look that enhances the sense of luxury.

Functionality remained equally important. Expanded closet storage, custom organization systems, and an integrated desk area ensure the space works beautifully for everyday life.

Bringing the Amalfi Coast to Florida

The outdoor spaces embrace a lighter and more playful side of the design.

Inspired by artwork featuring the colors and energy of the Amalfi Coast, the palette incorporates shades of blue, touches of citrus, and relaxed coastal influences.

The result is an outdoor environment designed for entertaining, gathering, and enjoying Florida living year-round.

From casual dining to comfortable lounge seating, every element supports the lifestyle our clients envisioned.

A Home Designed to Last

The most successful renovations aren’t defined by trends.

They’re defined by thoughtful decisions, timeless design, and spaces that support the lives unfolding within them.

At Amalfi Cove Residence, every choice was guided by a desire to preserve character while improving functionality, creating a home that feels both elegant and deeply personal.

This traditional home renovation is a reflection of what we value most as designers: honoring the past, embracing the present, and creating homes that will be loved for years to come.

Styling the Finishing Layer

A beautifully designed home is about more than furniture and finishes. The final layer is what brings the space to life.

Throughout Amalfi Cove Residence, we styled each room with carefully selected accessories, tabletop pieces, decorative objects, artwork, and textiles from Salt & Creek, our sister company and home boutique based in Tequesta, Florida.

Styling is often where a home begins to tell its story. It’s the collected books on a cocktail table, the woven tray placed on a kitchen island, the layered bedding in a primary suite, and the thoughtful tabletop details that make guests feel welcome. These finishing touches add warmth, personality, and a sense of lived-in elegance that cannot be achieved through furniture alone.

Because Jennifer Lynn Interior Design and Salt & Creek work so closely together, we’re able to create interiors that feel cohesive from the architectural details down to the smallest decorative accents. Every object is selected with intention, ensuring the home feels complete, personal, and reflective of the people who live there.
